Preface
The fifth edition of Medical Microbiology builds on the strengths that have defined previous editions, combining core scientific principles with clinically oriented, system-based perspectives to explore the interaction between infectious agents and the host immune response. The book continues to carry the name Mims’ Medical Microbiology in recognition of Cedric Mims’ foundational role in shaping this influential work. We also acknowledge the significant contributions of Derek Wakelin, who played a key role in earlier editions and has now stepped down as a principal author.
This edition retains and enhances several hallmark features, including illustrated “Conflict” concepts in the opening chapters, along with chapter-specific sections such as “Lessons in Microbiology” and concise “Key Facts” summaries. Substantial updates have been made across the text, particularly in areas covering microbial genomics, diagnostic approaches to infection, antimicrobial therapy and chemotherapy, and immune defense mechanisms. Tables and figures have been revised to reflect current knowledge, and the Pathogen Parade has been updated and is now available exclusively online.
In addition, the chapter addressing the epidemiology and control of infectious diseases has undergone a comprehensive revision, replacing earlier content to better reflect contemporary strategies and practices in infection prevention and public health.
